Car and Bike Transport by Carrier: How It Works, What It Costs and What to Prepare

Driving your own car to a new city is tiring and adds wear and risk. Many families move their car and bike on a carrier together with the household goods. Here is how it works.

How it works

• You share the vehicle details, pick-up address and drop-off city.
• A carrier or a covered vehicle collects the car or bike from your door or a nearby point.
• The vehicle travels with other vehicles or with your household goods to the destination.
• You receive it at the new address, or at an agreed point, and sign the receipt after checking it.

Car carrier or driving yourself

• A carrier saves your time and avoids mileage on the odometer, wear, fuel cost and the risk of a long drive.
• Driving can be cheaper for short distances if you are travelling anyway.
• For long routes, such as Coimbatore to Chennai, Bangalore or Hyderabad, a carrier is a popular choice.

Bikes and scooters

Two-wheelers are usually wrapped and secured in a covered vehicle, often along with the household goods. They should be upright and tied down, with the fuel tank nearly empty.

Documents to keep ready

• Registration certificate (RC) and a copy of the insurance policy
• Valid ID of the owner
• Authorisation letter if someone else hands over or receives the vehicle
• A note of any existing scratches or damage, with dated photos

How to prepare your vehicle

• Wash it so existing marks are visible. Take clear photos from all sides, including the odometer.
• Remove personal items and valuables. Loose items can be lost or damaged.
• Keep the fuel level low, about a quarter of a tank.
• Disable or secure alarms. Fold in the mirrors and retract the aerial.
• Hand over all keys and ask for a written receipt.

• Distance and route
• Type of vehicle: hatchback, sedan, SUV, scooter or motorbike
• Open or covered carrier
• Whether it is combined with a household move, which usually helps
• Pick-up and drop-off at your door, or at a terminal

At delivery

Inspect the vehicle before you sign. Compare it with your photos and note any new damage on the receipt. Start it and check that the lights and battery work.
