How to Shift an AC, Washing Machine and Refrigerator Safely

What to do before, during and after moving your split AC, washing machine, refrigerator, geyser and TV, and why uninstalling appliances is a skilled job.

Updated 24 October 2026

Large appliances are expensive and easy to damage. Doing a few simple things before the movers arrive can prevent leaks, dents and faults.

Split air conditioner

  • A split AC should be uninstalled by a trained technician, not by the packing crew or by yourself. The refrigerant has to be handled correctly and the pipes protected.
  • Ask the technician to seal the pipe ends and bag the outdoor and indoor units separately.
  • Keep both units upright during transport. Pack the remote, brackets and screws in a labelled bag.
  • After fitting, the AC may need a gas top-up. This is normal and is charged separately.
  • Book installation at the new home in advance, especially in summer when technicians are busy.

Washing machine

  • Turn off the water, disconnect the inlet and drain hoses, and drain every drop of water from the machine and hoses.
  • Secure the drum with transit bolts if you still have them. If not, ask the packer to immobilise it.
  • Tape the lid or door shut and keep the machine upright.
  • Check the tap and hose at the new place before connecting. Old taps can leak.

Refrigerator

  • Empty it, switch it off and defrost it at least 24 hours before the move. Wipe it dry so no water collects inside.
  • Remove glass shelves and wrap them separately. Tape the doors shut.
  • Keep it upright on the truck. If it was laid on its side, let it stand upright for several hours before switching it on.

Geyser, water purifier and wall-mounted TV

  • Drain the geyser fully. Keep the purifier filters in a sealed bag.
  • Remove the TV from its bracket and pack it like any other screen, upright and cushioned.

Why uninstalling and fitting costs extra

Uninstalling and re-fitting appliances is skilled work done by trained hands, with tools and sometimes a second person. That is why most movers, including us, charge for it separately per item. You can add the items you need in our price form so the quote is accurate from the start.

Do not forget

  • Check warranty and service contact details for each appliance.
  • Take photos of the connections before you disconnect them.
  • Test every appliance soon after arrival and report any problem the same day.
